The history

Just Labels and Nologo Studios crossed paths in mid 2008 when Just Labels approached us to develop a website with a process managed backend that would allow them the freedom to manage the orders, customers details and logistics that make up their business. The system would enable the frontend user to create a personalized order in which they could customize their labels (stationary, shoe, address and gift labels) with their name, choose a colour, a font and how many labels they would like printed.

The backend provides a platform for Just Labels staff to view orders that have been placed on the website and process these from receiving the order, all the way to scanning and the shipping thereof. The system also has a very detailed reporting engine that allows Just Labels to make marketing decisions based on where their orders originated (down to areas and schools) and what trends are presenting themselves in the market.

This system was rolled out in the latter part of 2008 and has successfully processed over 16000 orders since.

The problem

While the system fulfilled the needs of Just Labels in the early parts of 2008 and most of 2009, there were a few stumbling blocks. Just Labels use a brilliant Windows based application from Seagull Scientific, (called Bartender) to print their labels and manage this end of the process and it became apparent that the human intervention required for the printing of the labels was, at times, holding up the delivery process.

The solution

An application needed to be created to link the website orders directly with the physical printers, it was mentioned that this couldn’t be / had never been done which only made us more excited for the challenge.

After playing around with Bartender for a few weeks and making use of the brilliant SDK provided by Seagull Scientific we became comfortable with the functionalities and processes Bartender followed to print labels. So with that knowledge in mind, we developed Just Labels an add on module / application which automates the entire print process.

This new module is able to read all the order information from the website, create the labels in the required Bartender format and send them directly to the printer, cutting down massively on errors and lead time.

Just Labels are now able to cut costs, enabling them to research new and better products and grow far beyond their current offering.
